Approved Texts for CCI
Our FYWP seeks to keep costs down for students and has moved toward using OER texts, excerpts and chapters from texts that stay within Fair Use guidelines, and readings from the open web. If you are looking for a textbook for your I/CCI course, we recommend this free OER textbook: A Guide to Rhetoric, Genre, and Success in First-Year Writing by Melanie Gagich and Emilie Zickel of Cleveland State U. The sample I/CCI schedule lists relevant readings from this text at the end.
Below are texts that our faculty have adopted in the past; we are sharing these here to give you a sense of the kinds of texts that align with our program. We continue to have a few desk copies on hand if you would like to peruse them.
Former Textbooks for I/CCI:
From Inquiry to Academic Writing: A Practical Guide, 4th Ed., Stuart Greene and April Lidinsky, Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2018. (ISBN: 9781319071240)*
They Say/I Say: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, 4th Ed. Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein, Norton, 2017. (ISBN: 9780393631678)
Former Supplemental texts:
Style: Lessons in Clarity and Grace, Joseph M. Williams and Joseph Bizup, 12/E, 2014. (ISBN: 9780134080413)
A Pocket Style Manual with Sentence Guides, 8th Ed. Diana Hacker and Nancy Sommers, 2016. (ISBN: 9781319197247)
Note: This edition comes with sentence templates representing academic moves, very similar to those in They Say/I Say, AND when you order the edition with these template, the price goes down for some mysterious reason. Should you order this, you likely should forgo They Say/I Say.*
